Poor fitting dentures can do more than be uncomfortable, and affect eating and speaking. Over time, severe complications can occur (like gum irritation). The resulting sores and blisters, if ignored, can cause bacterial and fungal infections which affect overall health.
Another complication from painful dental appliances is they may also cause bone resorption (or shrinking) that leads to changes in the facial structure. Since our jaw requires support, ill-fitting dentures may damage bone structure, which eventually gives the appearance of a saggy face and/or sunken lips.
To prevent further complications, dentists recommend that patients return for a recall visit once every few months. During this visit, your oral health care provider may check for signs and symptoms of gum disease and if your mouth is adapting to the dentures. Additionally, they may make adjustments to your dentures to help them fit properly. They could also offer additional advice to help you make the most out of your dentures.
There are times when your dentures may still feel uncomfortable, despite an adjustment. If your dentist notices a consistent pattern of discomfort, you could benefit from soft liners. Here are some facts about soft liners:
What are soft liners?
These are an artificial layer of soft, compressible material placed between mouth tissue and the denture base. Soft liners are used as a kind of “shock absorber” to increase a patient’s comfort while wearing dentures.
Who can use soft liners?
- Flat (or nearly flat) gum tissues
- Gums with thin tissue over bony areas
- Chronically sore gums
What are the benefits of soft liners?
- Reduce direct pressure to tissue.
- Make dentures more stable and comfortable (especially for patients who have sensitive underlying tissue)
- Slow gum shrinkage by compressing and conforming to the changing jaw bone structure
- Stabilize the bite by adding support to the jaw bone
- Evenly distribute the force used when chewing (which relieves pressure from dentures on gums)
