Dentures do not last forever, no matter how well made they are. Over time, even the most durable dentures need replacing to maintain a snug fit in the mouth. Meticulous care may help extend life and maintain the appearance of dentures, but generally they need replacing every five to seven years.
Younger people who properly care for dentures may replace them after seven years. But for people who have early bone loss (due to health issues or age), dentures may not last as long.
What affects the lifespan of dentures?
1. Strength. The materials from which dentures are made determine how long a they will function. Appliances made from strong substances last longer.
2. Durability. Denture deterioration is affected by changes in the wearer’s mouth and jaw joints. The dentures’ longevity is affected by their ability to weather stress or force.
3. Fit. The placement of the base over the jawbone ridge plays an important factor on a set of dentures’ stability, comfort, and function. The fit needs to be adjusted over time to adapt to physical changes in the body.
Consult with a denturist to determine if your dentures need adjustment or replacement. If there are signs of significant wear and tear on the dentures (and if they are already five to seven years old), replacement is a strong option, for fit, function, health, and cost.
Worn out dentures that are not immediately replaced may change your speech and appearance. During a checkup, a denture provider will check your bite and look for early signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) so it can be prevented. Dentures might also prevent tooth loss; your denture provider can detect signs of gum disease and recommend treatment.
